Fight card on January 27, 2007 featured Kelly Pavlik vs. Jose Luis Zertuche in a middleweight fight and Jorge Arce vs. Julio Roque Ler in a super flyweight contest.

In the first fight, Pavlik, from Youngstown, Ohio showed poise and power in KO'ing Zertuche in the 8th Round.  They are talking about making a fight with Jermain Taylor for the middleweight title.  It would be a big step up for Pavlik.  But he has power and power can make up for some technical difficulties.


1.  Mixing it up in first round.  Both fighters landed heavy punches right off
the bat.

2.  Tall and lean, Pavlik made good use of a quick and stiff
jab.

3.  Zertuche slips jab here.

4.  Getting down low keeps Zertuche out of trouble.

5.  Pavlik looks to unload.

6.  Pavlik kept up steady pressure.

7.  A stiff jab is a fighter's best friend.

8.  Once Zertuche straightened up he got into trouble.

9.  Zertuche was punching back.  Here landing a hard right.  Pavlik took
the punches well.

10.  These sharp shots hurt Zertuche.

11.  Jab finds head.

12.  Zertuche kept trying.

13.  Power on the inside.

14.  Stiff and straight.

15.  Trading.

16.  Again and again.

17.  Pavlik got that right hand up to block those left hooks.

18.  Zertuche is hurt.  The heavy shots had worn him down.

19.  Out on his feet, the ref rushes in to stop fight.

20.  The winner...


In the other co-feature, Mexican Jorge Arce won a unanimous decision over Argentinian Julio Roque Ler in a Super-Flyweight 12 rounder.  Ler was content to lay on the ropes, trying to make Arce punch himself out.  The strategy didn't work.  Ler did flurry occassionally and showed good speed but he was the clear loser.


1.  Arce enters arena on horse.

2.  Putting pressure on.

3.  Trying to find a  hole in the defense.

4.  Working on the inside.

5.  Going downstairs.

6.  Trying to punch through gloves.

7.  Ler actually throws a counter punch.

8.  Ler's nose walks into a glove.

9.  Looking for each other.

10.  You can see Arce thinking about the problem.

11.  Ler counterpunches.

12.  Arce kept up constant punch volume.  Never discouraged.

13.  Good intensity.

14.  Finding a hole downstairs.

15.  Working.

16.  If not pinned on the ropes, then sliding on the ropes.

17.  When Ler punched, he punched sharply.

18.  Trying a wide left hook...

         19.  ...but missing

20.  Back to the old routine.

21.  Arce was too smart not to get too comfortable.

22.  Gotta please the crowd with the hands down bravado.

23.  There he is.. let's punch at  him.

24.  After decision--I tried to make  him fight.

25.  Hey I came to war but he didn't.

26.  Nice pay day--not hurt--happy.

27.  Matinee idol.

In an undercard fight, rising junior middleweight Vanes Martirosyan might short work of Taronze Washington, scoring a two round KO.


1.  Martirosyan works the body early.

2.  Looking for opening.

3.  Martirosyan was very measured in his punches.

4.  Left uppercut.

5.  That left is hurting Washington.

6.  Now the right does the job.

7.  Combos finish it up.

8.  Washington is disappointed but there can only be one winner.
