GOLDEN GLOVES PHOTOS--ALL TAKEN AT THE SAN FRANCISCO GOLDEN GLOVES FROM 1976-79.

First, a few brief thoughts.  Boxing is hard.  I saw teenage kids in good shape be exhausted after 3 rounds of punching.  The pros learn how to relax so their
adrenaline doesn't run high and then low.  In going through these I found a lot of clear shots of knockdowns.  I guess wider punches and more space between
the fighters help the hard working boxing photographer.

1GG.  The pros make landing a punch look easy.
The amateurs find their hands winding up in weird
positions, as they hit a bunch of air.

2GG.  A triumphant moment.

3GG.  This punch led to what you see at your right------

4GG.

5GG.  The big fellas mix it up.

6GG.  It's funny about memory.  I remember this fight.
The gentleman on the left had the nickname of Slim.  I guess
nicknames stay with you--that's why fighters have them.

7GG.  Reaching with the right--not bad technique.

8GG.  I like the feet in this one.

9GG.  His head was right there!  I swear.

10GG.  Classic muscle pose.

11GG.  Both punching.

12GG.  Timber!  (go to 13)

13GG.  One more nudge.  (go to 14)

14GG.  Success at last!

15GG.  If you could get out of my lap I would really
appreciate it.  (That's me--only thinking about my needs!)

16GG.  Finding a way to get out of the way of a punch!

17GG.  Getting your feet to do what you want in boxing
is hard.  Somebody's punching you, or pulling on you, or
pushing you.

18GG.  Hands, hands, return to guard my face, please.

19GG.  From way back there, true.  But nice and straight.

20GG.  This is not only another knockdown to me.  This is a photo
I can partially interpret.  I see in the right hand corner trophies
sitting on the ring apron.  So I know it's the final night of the tourney.
Also, the ref is out of position, he's too far back to prevent the follow
up punch that is about to land.

21GG.  It's like watching a freight train go by,
just missing your head.

22GG.  Somehow, they both managed to miss.

23GG.  Flail, flail, and maybe you'll get yourself
together before the next onslaught.

24GG.  This is what I recommend.  Keep your glove
in your opponent's eyes.  That way he won't hit you.

25GG.  These next few photos are a series.  I remember this
fight.  For the heavyweight GG title.  Both fighters took turns
knocking each other down.  The crowd loved it.

26GG.  A lot of time the big fellas don't like mixing it up,
afraid that one punch will ruin their evening.  These guys didn't
have that particular neuroses.

27GG.  Ok, you've had your fun, now it's my turn!

28GG.  Maybe just one more of these will do the trick!

29GG.  Payback is sweet.

30GG.  Success at last!  (The guy on the canvas got up to
win a disputed decision.)

31GG.  The Ricardo Mayorga school of throwing
an overhand right.

32GG.  Both men working.

33GG.  On the mark.

34GG.  One inch off and out of position.

35GG.  Walking into one.

36GG.  Legs, legs, get back underneath me, legs.

37GG.  I included this because it is the widest step
I've ever seen anybody take in a ring.

38GG.  On the move.

39GG.  I think the rushing ref says it all.  Get your
head back inside the ropes!

40GG.  Trapped in a corner.

41GG.  Coming from way, way back.

42GG.  Both hands out, the punch slips right in.

43GG.  I like the forward thrust of both fighters.

44GG.  Supposedly the other side of the ropes is a
safe haven.  Not here.

45GG.  Yes indeed, there is pain in boxing.

46GG.  Clean shots hurt.

47GG.  Left hooker vs. straight right hand.

48GG.  Ouch!

49GG.  Ouch continued.  Boxing is cold.  The guy
jumping off his feet is very, very happy.

50GG.  Talk about lining up a punch...

51GG.  Both fighters slipping and sliding like Fred
Astaire.

52GG.  I like this because I see two contrasting personas.
The guy in the corner is trying to put into practice what his trainer
has taught him--keep your hands up!  The other guy has a war mask on--
this is boxing, not tennis--look mean!

53GG.  Sometimes you just got to put your head down
and hope the other guy can't find it.

54GG.  Very pleased with himself.

55GG.  Left jab snaps head back.

56GG.  Here's our friend Slim back.  Taking a hard right.

57GG.  Sway, sway, sway.

58GG.  The pain is evident.  The winner is still prepared,
just in case.

59GG.  This is how you spell  O  U   T !

60GG.  A happy day at the office.

61GG.  Catching him as he goes by.

62GG.  On the mark.

63GG.  Hit by something a lot stronger than a breeze.

64GG.  Touching down after punch.

65GG.  A fitting last shot.  Boxing is this.  The sweet
science (to those not being hit) and a very hard test
otherwise.
A friendly note if you've worked your way down this far.  I've compacted the files
as much as I could.  Otherwise the page took too long to load up.  The pictures are all very
sharp.
